Before you know it, five years have flown by. On September 1, 2016, I officially launched the company. The fact that this company’s story has unfolded so quickly and successfully is largely thanks to my clients. They wanted to improve connections within the public transit system, seek advice on implementing modern software systems, or procure new technologies for buses and trains. So, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank, above all, the people who helped get this company off the ground!
geminiptc’s unique selling point—not limiting itself to a single technology or merely providing consulting services—has proven to be effective. Time and again, companies want to know how the complex software systems of public transit operators work together and who they need to talk to so that their product fits into this landscape. We have always been able to help precisely when it came to bringing partners together and integrating innovative solutions.
The topic of on-demand transportation has emerged as a particular focus of our work. It all started with a call from the CEO of a transportation company, who said: “Kay, you know a lot about on-demand transportation and you’re based in Berlin. Please take a look at these ride-pooling providers and tell us if this makes sense,” a success story began five years ago that is certainly unique in the recent history of public transit. Suddenly, alongside traditional on-demand transport, we have seen the emergence of a completely new transport offering, the development of which is far from complete. Here at geminiptc, we have certainly gained unique expertise and are supporting a large number of these projects, whether on the client or contractor side.
But what happens next? Much has changed; some aspects have become more pronounced, while others have fallen by the wayside. At the moment, the topic of “new mobility”—that is, the entire spectrum of sharing and pooling services, including multimodal and intermodal platforms—is emerging as a major area of activity.
The topic of zero-emission powertrains is also gaining increasing prominence. How do we provide an overview of fuel consumption data and range? How do we integrate these types of powertrains into traditional software systems? These are areas we are increasingly focusing on.
To this end, geminiptc has brought together a community of consultants, transportation planners, software developers, and hardware specialists, whom we would be happy to make available to assist you with your projects. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all my partners for their excellent collaboration, the exchange of ideas, and their critical review of many projects!
The reorganization of the software landscape is undoubtedly the most pressing issue on the agenda for the entire public transportation sector. Companies like Google and Uber have grown into serious competitors for traditional public transportation providers when it comes to information and operations. Therefore, our most important task will be to establish a counterbalance to this. We must create offerings for passengers that provide information at least on par with the aforementioned providers and offer attractive travel options. To do this, we can no longer continue working as we have in the past. We will have to significantly further develop our products and put even more work into them to make them more attractive to passengers.
Ultimately, we will have to decide whether we continue to view public transportation as a public service or as an attractive alternative to private car travel. As for me, I’ve already made up my mind. If I can no longer find a reason to get in a car, then we’ve achieved our goal.
